about South Church

South Church, as it turns out, is an affectionate abbreviation for
South Presbyterian Church.

That we are a Presbyterian church tells you one thing among many about us. We are part of the Presbyterian Church, USA; we elect some of us to make decisions, others to care for the needs of members and friends.

We are part of a regional judicatory through which we are represented in the bi-annual meetings of the national decision-making body, the General Assembly.

On issues of sexual justice, we have been part of a loyal opposition, arguing for the full inclusion of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender sisters and brothers. This opposition rests on our deep commitment to a hospitality which welcomes everyone—and refuses any exclusion as one more violence.

at South

South Church is hugely interested in sharing the common-life of the four river towns where we live.

Our buildings are variously: a concert hall, a theater, a village green, a union hall, a children’s center, a gallery, and, of course, a sanctuary—all of these with doors wide open to our neighbors.

So we are a sometime home to: Community Nursery School (www.cnsdobbsferry.com), Days of Wonder Day Care, 12-step programs, Rivertowns Yoga, Irish Step Dancing, the Red Monkey Theater, SPARC (for handicapped adults), Angelica and Charis (local choral groups), the Community Walk-About Chorus (a Pete Seeger sing along group), a local chapter of the United Federation of Teachers, Creative Ways (a childrens’ art plus program,) Concerned Families of Westchester (a local peace group), and other occasional users.
